Shug McGaugheyClaude "Shug" McGaughey was an assistant to David Whiteley for five years before taking out his trainer's license in 1979. In November of 1985 he became the trainer for the Phipps family stable for whom he produced champions Easy Goer, Heavenly Prize, Inside Information, Personal Ensign, Smuggler, and Storm Flag Flying. In 1993 Shug won five graded stakes at Belmont in the same day winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup with Miners Mark, the Kelso Handicap with Lure, the Frizette with Heavenly Prize, the Beldame with Dispute, and the Lawrence Realization Stakes with Strolling Along. In 2004 Shug was inducted to the Hall of Fame, but has continued his success with recent graded stakes winners Pine Island (G1 Alabama), Carriage Trail (G1 Spinster), Boca Grande (G2 Demoiselle), Pleasant Home (G1 Breeder's Cup Distaff), Dancing Forever (G1 Manhattan), and Sightseeing (G2 Peter Pan) amongst others. |
