Michael MatzMichael started training thoroughbreds in 1998 after a highly successful equestrian career as a show jumping rider. He won eight Pan American medals and rode for the Olympic equestrian team in 1976, 1992, and 1996. Michael was selected by his fellow Olympians to represent the USA as he carried the American flag in the closing ceremonies at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He closed out his show jumping career as the leading money rider in American history with earnings of $1.7 million. Michael won his first Grade I when Kicken Kris won the Arlington Million. A couple of years later, he rose to national prominence when he won the Kentucky Derby with the ill-fated Barbaro. Matz is based at Fair Hill training center in Elkton, MD and has also trained and enjoyed graded stakes success with winners Round Pond (G1 Breeders Cup Distaff/Ladies Classic), Visionaire (G1 King's Bishop), Chelokee (G3 Northern Dancer), Street Sounds (G2 Vinery Madison), Ready Set (G3 West Virginia Derby) and Sangrita (G2 Chilukki). |
